!!!IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED!!!
The following two bills that could reduce your ability to purchase firearms and ammunition, or to take any kind of firearms training, are currently pending on the Senate Floor where they can be voted upon at any time:
AB 2498 (Saldana-D) Firearms training: eligibility to possess firearms – Would require that anyone desiring to take a firearms training class must first obtain a background check showing that they are not in a category of persons prohibited by state or federal law from possessing a firearm.
Currently, the Department of Justice fees and other associated costs for such a check total approximately $69 to $89. The bill was originally aimed at businesses that train personnel under a federal contract who, according to the author’s office, are instructed on how to “hurt people”. But, the bill has now been expanded to include anyone who takes any training of any kind, even a basic safety course for new owners of firearms!
The added cost and red tape this bill would impose on prospective trainees would likely stop most from seeking to take even the basic courses!
The author has also been talking about expanding the proposed legislation’s coverage to include background checks for purchasers of rifle scopes!! She believes that scopes, even those for hunting, are “tactical” equipment that can also be used to “hurt people”.
If this bill passes, there will be no end to proposals to require background checks to buy firearms related items under the theory that they can be used to facilitate “hurting people” with a firearm.
For example, firearm cleaning supplies! Requiring background checks to take any kind of firearms training is just the beginning. This is why major anti-firearms rights activists like the Brady Campaign are supporting the bill!!! AB 2498 must be stopped!!!!
AB 2948 (Leno-D) Firearms: sales at the Cow Palace - Would ban the sale of ammunition and firearms at the state owned Cow Palace exposition facility near San Francisco.
This bill would have the result of banning all gun shows held there, and could be used as a precedent for similarly banning gun shows at publicly owned facilities throughout the state!
Buying a firearm at a gun show is no different than going to a firearms dealer’s store. Background checks and waiting periods are required for purchases at gun shows just like at a gun store. AB 2948 represents a new attempt by anti- firearms rights groups to find innovative ways to discourage people from owning firearms!! They support this bill for obvious reasons!!! But, like most such bills, it would have no impact on criminals. AB 2948 must also be stopped!!!!
!!! If these bills are passed on the Senate Floor, they will immediately go back to the Assembly Floor for a final vote of approval on the amendments that were made in the Senate. This could happen very quickly !!!
It is imperative that all Senators and Assembly Members be immediately contacted!!!
All Senators have e-mail addresses listed, although it is much better to make personal contact with them or, if necessary, with their office staff. Their phone numbers and regular mailing addresses are also listed.
